Compliance of icu-nurses to a cam-icu implementation
(2012)Department of Health Sciences
- Abstract
- Delirium is a brain dysfunction often occurring in the intensive care unit (ICU); and frequently missed. This study aimed to investigate the compliance of ICU-nurses to a CAM-ICU implementation. Methods: Implementation guidelines in present study stated that a patient presumed to stay on the ICU for more than 24 hours, and who was 18 years or older was to be monitored for delirium using the Confusion Assessment Method for the Intensive Care Unit (CAM-ICU) at least once each nurse shift. In order to assess the nurses’ compliance with the implementation, the study was performed retrospectively as a chart audit. The audit encompassed all the patients admitted to the ICU in January and September, 2011.Results: Eighty (54%) patients were... (More)

In order to assess the nurses’ compliance with the implementation, the study was performed retrospectively as a chart audit. The audit encompassed all the patients admitted to the ICU in January and September, 2011.Results: Eighty (54%) patients were admitted to the ICU in January, and 67 (46%) in September. Twenty-five (17%) were eligible for audit in January and 23 (16%) in September. Results revealed a mean missing CAM-ICU evaluation rate of 65% in January, and 54% in September (p. 0.016).Conclusion: The objective of this study was to investigate the compliance of ICU-nurses to a delirium-scale implementation after an education intervention. The study revealed a significant improvement, countered however, by the substantial CAM-ICU evaluation missing rate; suggesting a deficiency among the nurses in regards to understanding the importance of detecting and managing delirium among patients in the ICU-setting.
