Abstract
Objective: To develop and initially test a new questionnaire to be used to investigate former ICU patients physical and psychosocial needs/problems and if it change over time. Design: A questionnaire was developed based on the Likert scale. The items were generated from literature search and from personal experiences of follow up visit. SF 12 was used to assess the questionnaires concurrent validity. Face and content validity was examined. Test-retest reliability was evaluated using spearman correlation for each item. Setting: Two mixed medical/surgical ICU in Sweden. Patients: Forty nine patients over 18 years which had been mechanical ventilated and had a length of stay in ICU of more than 24 hours. Totally 39 patients completed the... (More)

Setting: Two mixed medical/surgical ICU in Sweden. Patients: Forty nine patients over 18 years which had been mechanical ventilated and had a length of stay in ICU of more than 24 hours. Totally 39 patients completed the first test and 17 completed retest. Methods and result: Two ICU researcher and five ICU nurses examined face and content validity, minor adjustments in the language were made. The questionnaire was administered at two times with a month between. The questionnaire had five sections, the sections physical and psychosocial had strong correlation. Concurrent validity between SF 12 and the questionnaire show strong correlation rs >0,5. Conclusion: The development of the questionnaire is a first step to a new instrument to be used for investigation of former ICU patients’ problems over time. A high response rate and no missing values could show that it was easy to answer. Content and concurrent validity were good. The questionnaire could be useful in clinical purposes after modifying some items and instructions. (Less)
