- Abstract
- In this essay I examine what function human remains fill in the exhibition Danmarks Oldtid at The National Museum in Copenhagen, and what image of prehistory the museum wants to mediate with human material and if they have followed any ethical guidlines in the presentation of human remains. I have also investegated what perception the visitors get from viewing human remains in the exhibition, and how they relate to the use of human remains in exhibitions.
My methods have consisted of observations, interviews and a survey amongst the visitors of the exhibitions. I have also investegated what perception the visitors get from viewing human remains in the exhibition, and how they relate to the use of human remains in exhibitions.
My methods have consisted of observations, interviews and a survey amongst the visitors of the exhibitions. The presentation of the remains is often dependent on its function, wich is to narrate, confirm and visualize the aspects, themes and image of prehistory wich is given in connection with other artefacts and the text-based information in the exhibition.
At the same time the human remains creates closeness to the viewer. For the museum it is important to exhibit human remains with respect, and their ambition is to tell as much as possible with the human material. The survey amongst the exhibition visitors and a personal interview showed that most of the respondents had a similar sense for the use of human remains in the exhibition. According to the respondents the human remains are important tools for reaching and mediating knowledge and at the same time evoke feelings of the visitors. Both the museum, most of the visitors and the interviewed person felt that a preservation of human remains for the future was more important than a possible reburial. The museum has refrained a vitalization of the exhibition and its human remains.
Despite this, some of the visitors and the interviewed person perceive the human remains in the exhibition to have this particular vitalizing effect. (Less)
