- Abstract
- This study is about the link between the economic system and the climate changes and how it affects the society and the politics. Scientific observations has illuminated that as a result of human activity our climate is about to change. The climate threat has exposed the question of limits which means that continued growth is not possible in a world of limited resources. The Western model is about to reach its end.
This thesis directs attention towards the argument that the impoverishment of the natural resources that leads to harmful emissions and destroys the climate is a consequence of an economic system and a model of society built on consumption and constant growth. This thesis directs attention towards the argument that the impoverishment of the natural resources that leads to harmful emissions and destroys the climate is a consequence of an economic system and a model of society built on consumption and constant growth. It is of necessity that we bring to the fore the question of how the climate changes affects the society and the politics, and increase the understanding of the close connection between the human, the society and the climate.
This paper shows that a large number of evidence indicates that the Western countries have passed the optimal size of their economy, and that the resources of earth are not enough for constant growth. This thesis argues that what is insisted to achieve is that we stop striving for continued growth, and that we ask ourselves how we can manage without growth, and how we can reduce the damages on the climate and provide economic stability and welfare. By analyzing the model of growth, the democratic condition, the structure of the operating system and the nation states deteriorate capacity to exercise power and control the politics, the critique is directed towards the contemporary system.
The conclusion of the thesis is that the managing of the climate changes is complicated by a neo-liberal ideology, and the belief on continued growth in a world of limited resources. This causes social injustice and disparity in the society, and leads to the diminishing of the nation-states power and legitimacy which weakens the representative democracy.
The normative ambition of the paper is to increase the understanding of the negative consequences on the climate that sustains by the contemporary economic system, in order to examine how we can change the situation. It is argued that an increased participation and involvement of the citizens and a public dialogue is a necessity in order to handle the climate threat that we are confronted with. The main purpose is to contribute to start such a dialogue and to increase the understanding of the consequences of the climate changes in the society. (Less)
