My conclusion is that two collective identities – the Muslims and the Republic – are being constructed. The two identities are being constructed relationally and can therefore be seen as the effect of each other. By studying how chains of equivalence are being established in the discourse I show that the Muslims are constructed as non-French, anti-democratic, unequal, unwilling to integrate, living in suburbs and sectarian social settings and as a group that practises non-French traditions. The Republic is on the other hand constructed as an identity that is composed of democratic, modern, secular, enlightened French citizens who uphold important French values such as liberty, tolerance, equality, respect and human dignity. I further conclude that a social order, and a notion of the Republic as superior to the Muslims, is being constructed in the discourse. (Less)
