The purpose of this study was to investigating the linkages between expressions of masculinities, risk taking in heterosexual relationships and the transmission of HIV and AIDS amongst young men from the Highlands region in Papua New Guinea. With a starting point in feminist theory and masculinities theory, this study has shown that strong linkages between expressions of masculinities, risk taking in heterosexual relationships and HIV and AIDS exist, with gender norms and cultural beliefs with regard to relationships within this context holding serious implications for equal negotiations on sexual health. The conclusion this study draws is that addressing dominant expressions of masculinities within the context of PNG is a key component in reducing HIV-related risk taking in heterosexual relationships. It furthermore argues that halting the spread of HIV and AIDS requires the active involvement of young men in defining and redefining what it means to be a “trupla man” or “real man”. (Less)
