- Abstract
- The purpose of this essay is to show how every individual’s consumption affects the environment and people all around the world. Our consumption has another price than the financial one we pay in the store. In my essay I analyze the different aspects of responsibility of states, companies and individuals. To get a theoretical perspective I used Magdalena Bexell’s theories about the need to expand the responsibility of the state to other actors and Thomas Pogge’s theory about the state as the main actor of responsibility for the protection of human rights. - The purpose of this essay is to show how every individual’s consumption affects the environment and people all around the world. Our consumption has another price than the financial one we pay in the store. In my essay I analyze the different aspects of responsibility of states, companies and individuals. To get a theoretical perspective I used Magdalena Bexell’s theories about the need to expand the responsibility of the state to other actors and Thomas Pogge’s theory about the state as the main actor of responsibility for the protection of human rights. By using NGO reports I focused my essay on the industry of shrimp farming and on who needs to take responsibility, morally and legally, for the human rights violations due to shrimp farming. The consumption of shrimps leads to a destroyed environment and violated human rights. Who bear responsibility is complex but the responsibility of the individual is essential when it comes to eating shrimps. The best way to stop the negative impact that the industry has is to stop eating shrimps and that is every individual’s responsibility. Companies have a hard time to take responsibility in the shrimp industry because they need to stop their business, which they of course will not do as long as it is profitable. States and organizations though have the responsibility to inform individuals about the situation and, if it’s possible with the associated financial losses, stop the import of shrimps. After all, the easiest way to take responsibility is for every individual to say no to shrimps. (Less)
