- Abstract
- Water that flows through a landfill brings pollution to the groundwater and the polluted water is called leachate. This polluted water has to be treated due to environmental law to prevent damage in nature and to human health. In this thesis, a new approach to detect the streaks of leachate has been developed. This new method looks at the composition of the dominating cations (positive ions) adsorbed to soil particles. Soil in two different areas – one leachate affected area and another reference area has been investigated and it was found to be a significant difference between the percent of calcium in soil between these areas. Calcium is usually the dominating cation, but the prevalence decreases due to leachate impact. An alternative... (More)

Calcium is usually the dominating cation, but the prevalence decreases due to leachate impact. An alternative way to quantify the effect of leachate is to measure the quota between cations and calcium, and the quota Mg/Ca in soil was found to be significantly different between the two areas. The test was reproduced for soil both slightly above and beneath the groundwater level – and it was found that the method was robust enough to give similar results for these different levels of.
