As the focus of society was turned on the individual social problems were redefined in new terms and new methods in social work emerged. As a result of individualization psychotherapy is a self-proclaimed liberator of the individual. One psychotherapy in particular has received the attention and the recognition from the discipline of social work for its efficacy to help the individual in the struggle of her harsh autonomy. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one of the most researched psychotherapies of today and it has become a common form of intervention in Social Work. By analyzing the public debate within a specific forum of social work; Socionomen, a journal by and for social workers, the purpose of this study was to explore the role of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy within social work and the attitudes among social workers towards CBT. The results of the study display a general positive attitude towards CBT and the general use of psychotherapy in social work. However some are questioning whether CBT specifically, should be the center of attention within the debate on psychotherapy since other therapies as well has shown to be effective. The use of psychotherapy in social work is however concluded to be an established intervention. (Less)
