Abstract
The aim of this qualitative study is to define and compare the professional role of school and medical counselors in Sweden. It also addresses the question whether the counselor is a unified profession and if it is established among other professions in the organizations. The analysis is based on interviews with three medical counselors and three school counselors. Theories used in the analysis are the theory of professional discretion and the profession theory including terms as jurisdiction, boundarys, autonomy, collaboration and competition. The study shows that there are some differences between the two types of counselors. The most prominent difference is that the counselors in health care are, in larger extent than school counselors,... (More)
The aim of this qualitative study is to define and compare the professional role of school and medical counselors in Sweden. The most prominent difference is that the counselors in health care are, in larger extent than school counselors, reliant on good collaboration with other professions to be able to perform work assignments. The medical counselors are also more likely to have difficulties with boundary work concerning themselves and psychologists and therefore it would also be easier for them to end up in competitive situations. Another difference is that school counselors are more free to configurate their personal professional role because of what we interpret as imprecise directions. The interviewees all give similar description of what the purpose of their work is, and what they contribute with to their organization, regardless if they work in health care or in school. This includes a holistic point of view. Because they contribute with similar things, we mean that they as a professional group can be considered as a unified profession. (Less)
