Greece is generally known in recent years for a difficult financial situation. We show that institutions and corruption play a big role in how society is structured. Measuring institutions is a difficult thing to do when there is no precise data that says "this is it." We have used a measure of Transparency International which is an organization that assesses countries corruption and rank them from 1-10 where 10 indicates that there is no corruption. In addition to this we also present figures from the Worldwide Governance Indicators which shows a scale of different measurements on institutions, however, between -2.5 to 2.5. We are also addressing corruption negative impact on their economic growth. Corruption is harmful in other aspects than just the growth as it can lead to large private costs or even imprisonment. The different countries cultures, histories and well-being is also a factor for corruption to occur in various degrees. However, corruption does not only have negative effects on a country when such can motivate and engage staff. Greece on the other hand has a very low support for their institutions, which puts the country in a facing high risk of exposure to corruption. A comparison of Greece with other OECD countries, will we see that Greece has a much higher form of corruption. This will depend on the including institutions but also its geographical situation and culture. Greece also has an advanced tax system resulting in the population taking the "easy way" and avoiding paying taxes to instead give bribes a different meaning. It also shows that social imposition such as social security is a major cause of corruption. (Less)
