- Abstract
- The media debate about child poverty in Sweden reached a new form of intensity in the spring of 2011. Various claims were made about whether or not child poverty was to be considered a matter of importance, due to its relative nature. My interest in how social problems are constructed made me choose to focus on this debate in my essay. The aim of this study was to, with a social constructionist approach; examine how child poverty was represented in the media. The analytical tools were inspired by theories about claims making and the empirical data consisted of 54 articles published in six Swedish newspapers during the year... (More)

The analytical tools were inspired by theories about claims making and the empirical data consisted of 54 articles published in six Swedish newspapers during the year 2011. I have analyzed my material by dividing it into categories using a qualitative method called perspective analysis. My conclusions suggest two prominent perspectives on child poverty; the individual and the collective perspective. These two perspectives make different claims about how the issue of child poverty in Sweden is to be defined, understood and handled. I also suggest that the debate about child poverty in Swedish press is most often concerned with the matter of defining whether child poverty is to be seen as an absolute or relative matter. (Less)
