This bachelor thesis examines the situation of children growing up with a parent with mental illness, a group that has been left out from research during a long period of time. The purpose of this thesis was to scrutinize the lives of these children and whether salutogenic factors not mentioned in previous research were occurring or not. The research is also directed towards the question; is it possible to examine the abovementioned factors, as well as the overall childhood experience by studying autobiographies? I found that relevant since the thesis was based on autobiographies as material. To grow up with a parent with mental illness is daunting, and these children express their fear of their parents’ disease and the worries it brings. For instance the feeling of not knowing how the situation will be at home while returning from a school day. Often children in those situations are forced to mature quicker than others and take more responsibility for themselves and their families, since their parent lack that ability. These children are also seen as a risk category for a future development of own mental illnesses. Nevertheless, many children handle situations like these well and manage to live normal lives. My wish was to examine what factors in their personal growth that rescued them from generating own problems. By studying and analyzing autobiographies I found that the healthy parent is a factor of security together with friends and other significant persons. I also found evidence of a positive correlation between having a pet and handling a troublesome childhood well, a factor that was not mentioned in any previous research. (Less)
