The purpose of this study was to examine how personnel within an asylum accommodation
for unaccompanied refugee children understood and looked at their own professional role,
both in terms of professionalism and emotional commitment. To examine this, we have

both in terms of professionalism and emotional commitment. To examine this, we have
conducted individual interviews with nine people who work in two different asylum homes
and we therefore used a qualitative approach. The results of our interviews revealed that
personnel at various asylum accommodations defined, and looked upon, social work with
unaccompanied refugee children in different ways, however the children’s’ life stories did
affected and shaped the relationships between the children and personnel into difference
perceived roles – buddy- and parental roles. In order to act professionally in this situation the
importance of limiting the emotional involvement for the children but also being able to
distinguish the feelings one indicate in its professional and private self was highlighted by the
personnel. As a strategy for this the personnel had to switch roles in certain situations, going
from more personal roles to acting as the professional perpetrator of social work. The
professional role was described such as at that in certain cases could damage the relationship
with the children but that it nevertheless was needed to identify oneself with not only because
of the own notion of what a professional social work with unaccompanied children do but also
to meet society's expectations of this role.
