- How do museums relate to working in a culturally diverse society? The notion of increasing diversity as a result of social change and Sweden as a multicultural society is central to public discussions and cultural initiatives. The goal for museums is to reflect demografics of society in their visitor numbers, and a shift to increase awareness of needs and views of the museum audience. This increases the concern to make museums more inclusive institutions. A main concern is how to represent the diversity of the museum audience and in what way museums should do this.

The method used is discourse analysis of museum’s official documents using Carol Lee Bacchi’s method The problem representation. The problems and solutions that are given shape by the analysis are seen as reflecting the museums strategies for working with diversity. The focus is on how these museums write about diversity, society, strategies and goals in various official documents from their institutions and what language and categories that are used to frame issues of diversity. Social- constructivism is the theoretical framework for the study.
The concepts used in the museum’s documents are analysed using the definitions of those that are discussed in the field of International Migration and Ethnic Relations (IMER). The museums perceptions of diversity are analyzed using Charles Taylor’s theory of politics of recognition which are seen as politics of difference or politics of universalism.
The result of the study is that in the museums documents, diversity can be seen as perceived in different ways. How the museum chooses to work with diversity is therefore also different between the museums. The questions are seen as the notion of recognizing difference or universalism. (Less)
