- Abstract
- The aim of this study was to examine which norms and values of gender and sexuality that counselors at youth clinics want to convey to their visitors. The study builds on the assumption that sex and sexuality are constructed socially and culturally, and in relation to each other. My assumption was that the youth clinic visitors are affected by the norms that are mediated by the counselor. I believe that the counselor by that has an important role in the construction of young people’s sexuality. - The aim of this study was to examine which norms and values of gender and sexuality that counselors at youth clinics want to convey to their visitors. The study builds on the assumption that sex and sexuality are constructed socially and culturally, and in relation to each other. My assumption was that the youth clinic visitors are affected by the norms that are mediated by the counselor. I believe that the counselor by that has an important role in the construction of young people’s sexuality. The informants point of view was that female and male visitors are equal, but at the same time they found that society's different expectations of women and men construct an inequality between them. The differences between women and men were therefore not denied, but either were they considered as biological. The informants expressed a desire not to convey gender-specific norms to their visitors. The view of women and men as fundamentally equal was, however, contradicted in other reasoning that the informants brought. For example, the informants believed that more men on the staff would get boys to realize that the clinic was also for them. (Less)
