Abstract (Swedish)
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the sermons and speeches of Lewis Jonsson (1874-1918.) He was vicar of Höör and Munkarp parishes between 1913 and 1918. Lewis Jonsson came from a small village, Sebbarp, in Skåne. As a young boy he studied in Gothenburg, where he lived during term time with his sister and her husband. He started studying for the priesthood at Lund University and graduated in 1899. During his first year as a priest Lewis Jonsson worked in Mörrum, Blekinge. After this he returned to Skåne and Malmö. He lived and worked in Malmö until he became a vicar of Höör in 1913. Höör was a small rural parish in the middle district of Skåne. He lived and worked in Malmö until he became a vicar of Höör in 1913. Höör was a small rural parish in the middle district of Skåne. He became very popular and filled the churches, people stood outside the church and they had to open the windows so people could hear him. Lewis Jonsson died quite young in the Spanish flu in 1918, almost 44 years old. He was buried on his birthday. Lewis Jonsson left a wife and five minor children after him, moreover a grieving congregation.

I heard about Lewis Jonsson almost 80 years later and became curious as to what he had accomplished. I have previously written an essay about him in 2008 and now I wanted to study his speeches and sermons. Only a few of his sermons and speeches have been preserved; the reason for this is said to be that he worked on his sermons, changed and added to them right up to the time of performance but crumpled them up afterward.

My main question is: Is there anything in the sermons that can be assumed to have contributed to Lewis Jonsson’s popularity as a preacher?

I have chosen to analyze all the sermons that are extant and three of his speeches. My purpose is to study these sermons and their construction. In this analysis I look at the sermon form and scope. I study how Lewis Jonsson opens his sermons and uses the opening words, and how the main elements are structured and how the sermons are terminated. I look at the style of the sermons and how Lewis Jonsson makes use of the Bible. I find certain themes typical of Lewis Jonsson which I classify. In conclusion, I present the findings of my analysis and see if I can get an answer to my question. The conclusion is that Lewis Jonsson clearly has worked extensively with his sermons, uses a language tailored to the audience and different rhetorical strategies. The most characteristic feature of his preaching was his ability to build a narrative story in his sermons. (Less)
