- Abstract
- In this master’s thesis I examine the Hiroshima City Manga Library to learn more about public libraries in other cultures and manga in a library environment. The purpose of the study is to investigate the Manga Library as place and the organization of information and the users in that place. The Manga Library was chosen because it is unique - the only public comic's library in Japan. I also have a personal interest in manga, anime, Japanese culture and public libraries. The following questions are used to study these areas: How does the library function as place? What do the library users do in this place? How is the information organized in the library room? To answer the questions I used ethnography as method - observations, interviews... (More)

To answer the questions I used ethnography as method - observations, interviews and photography, and theories about the library as place.
The result and analysis of the study shows that the Manga Library is built as a place for reading in peace and quiet because of the environment both in and outside the library, from the windows and the carpets inside to the park outside. Even if the Manga Library has "everyone" as their target group, men are the main group of users. Men often stay and read manga at the library whereas women tend to borrow and read at home, which can be connected to Ray Oldenburg and his theories about the third place and men. The organization of the collection in the library is mostly based on manga writers, which can be related to the high status comic authors have in Japan and that the readers often have a close relationship to the authors. The study of the Hiroshima City Manga Library connects three exiting subject areas; public libraries, manga and Japanese culture. (Less)
