Qualitative interviews and group discussions with a constructionist stance guided data collection in the capital Santiago de Chile. The data showed a great desire to conform to societal norms in respect of behaviour and expectations. It also revealed that the identity of both men and women in contemporary Chile is highly gendered and contextualized; the norms in the present study are highly urbanised and different from those in rural areas. There seems to be a constant pressure of fulfilment and self-realization, yet bounded by traditional cultural norms that do not allow for change outside of the consoling sphere. (Less)
