Abstract
In this essay I stress the importance of the individual to act on her own moral conviction through civil disobedience. First I discuss the definition of civil disobedience by John Rawls, A. D. Woozley and David Lefkowitz to recognize different important aspects of it.
Through a discussion of these aspects I draw the conclusion that the core of civil disobedience is to not surrender one's own judgement and to act upon one's own moral conviction, even if it means breaking the law.
Christian Bay puts forward the idea that self-respect can be seen as a basic human need and I use his idea to explore if civil disobedience can be grounded on self-respect and if it justifies the individual to break the law.
