Abstract
The number of accidents in the construction industry has always been high and despite the many efforts made by national legislation and the companies themselves they remain alarmingly so. The purpose of this report is to examine how workers see their own working-environment and how they think that safety performance on construction sites may be improved. This is achieved by conducting interviews with a number of construction workers. By discussing empirical research as to why workers engage in unsafe behavior and other factors affecting safety behavior this report also aims to provide a background to the factors leading to the high number of occupational accidents. According to theory the number of accidents is based on a lack of knowledge... (More)
The number of accidents in the construction industry has always been high and despite the many efforts made by national legislation and the companies themselves they remain alarmingly so. According to theory the number of accidents is based on a lack of knowledge and experience as well as a relaxed attitude to safety among workers. This seems to be the case although many workers claim to be well aware of the risks involved in their daily work. The results of this report states that to reduce the number of occupational accidents more work needs to be done in several areas; •Human behavior and attitudes must change so that accidents do not occur due to laziness or flippancy.
•Companies need a well planned safety policy strongly rooted in all layers of the organization. Both workers and management must have the appropriate education and knowledge to ensure a level of competence and awareness of risks.
•The behavior and attitude of management has great influence over the workers conduct when it comes to safety. (Less)
