- Abstract
- The introduction of new technology in the complex and safety-critical obstetric setting represents a notoriously difficult process. The changes of working practice brought about by a new device can challenge and affect professional boundaries. Consistent with the epistemological pluralism of medical social science research we decided to explore and celebrate the partially overlapping and sometimes contradictory accounts generated by analyzing the problem of professional boundaries between midwifes and doctors in the labor ward introducing new technology.
Ethnographical approaches such as observatory studies and narrative interviews allowed us to see the very definition of a situation as normal or non-normal as an exercise of power in... The changes of working practice brought about by a new device can challenge and affect professional boundaries. Consistent with the epistemological pluralism of medical social science research we decided to explore and celebrate the partially overlapping and sometimes contradictory accounts generated by analyzing the problem of professional boundaries between midwifes and doctors in the labor ward introducing new technology.

We also looked at the technical, psychological and social aspects of decision making, aiming at identifying social or cultural variables that are absent in many accounts of clinical decision-making that simply state that this kind of work is framed or determined by social or organizational issues or variable.
Several aspects linked to power, autonomy and gender among obstetric practitioners were observed suggesting an impact upon quality and safety in birth care by the social relations among healthcare professionals and the changes that might occur in relation to implementation of new methods. (Less)
