Abstract
In May 2011 Tetra Pak launched the first carton bottle for aseptic milk, the Tetra Evero Aseptic (TEA). This Master Thesis aims to give proposals on how the future development of the mechanism working as a dolly when the inductor is making the longitudinal sealing (LS) on the package in the A6 filling machine, should be continued. The current LS mechanism is not fulfilling the requirements in function and hygiene. By analyzing the current solution new concepts on how this mechanism could work was generated and proposals were given.

This thesis presents a concept development process that was performed by defining the Master Thesis scope and then analyzing the current mechanisms. With the knowledge collected from the analyze concepts were generated and then evaluated according to the Ulrich and Eppingers method, Concept Screening. After the first evaluation the concepts were further developed in order to ensure their relevance. The concepts were then evaluated a second time according to Ulrich and Eppingers Concept Scoring. The analysis of the current solution and the concepts then provided the basis for the proposals on how Tetra Pak should continue the further development of the mechanism.
The analysis of the current solution was made in order to analyze the relations between the different design parameters and to state the requirements on the mechanism. This was done by creating a P-matrix, a Knowledge Matrix and analyzing the existing Product Interaction Matrix. With the information from the current solution and through a patent search 26 concepts were generated. After the two evaluations only three concepts remained. None of the three concepts could fulfill the strict hygiene and tolerance requirements and therefore no clear winning concept was chosen.
The difficulties related to why the hygiene and tolerance requirements couldn’t be fulfilled with the new concepts, worked as a guideline for the final recommendations given to Tetra Pak. More tests needs to be done in order to create knowledge about the LS behavior and the mechanisms effect on the hygiene. More tests should also be done on the current solution before continuing with the new concepts because of the equal scoring in the second evaluation. (Less)
