Abstract
Grooming is a widespread problem all over the Internet. Swedish research proves this issue to be more common than suspected for youth spending time on the Internet. This study focuses on Internet relationships from the perspective of exposed grooming victims. How are Internet relations handled by grooming victims? Which is the main reason that relations on the internet could become harmful for young people? In this study, these questions are discussed by interviewing grooming victims based on the victims’ personal experiences and further analyzed by using the concept... (More)

This study focuses on Internet relationships from the perspective of exposed grooming victims. Central questions are: What are the consequences for young people after establishing contacts with unknown persons? Which are the main features of relations on the Internet? How are Internet relations handled by grooming victims? Which is the main reason that relations on the internet could become harmful for young people? In this study, these questions are discussed by interviewing grooming victims based on the victims’ personal experiences and further analyzed by using the concept the risk society, Erving Goffmans theatre metaphor, the concept hyperreality and the routine activity theory by Felson and Cohen. The study showed that by using chatrooms that provide the possibility to be completely anonymous combined with false self presentations, youth are tricked into the hands of Groomers. Another result was that people on the Internet, as well as Groomers, can continue harassment on the Internet if they know that they will not get caught because they are anonymous. (Less)
