Abstract
Background Lantmännen is one of Scandinavia’s largest
and problem corporations in agriculture, food and energy. Since many of the corporations’ markets are mature and highly competitive there are low margins and hence a constant need for new and improved products, processes and services to maintain profitability. There is also a constant increase in complexity and cost of research and development, which has made Lantmännen interested in increasing the use of open innovation. The purpose is to find a way to share costs and decrease the risks associated with research and development, and also gain access to a richer flow of ideas and innovations.

Purpose The purpose of the thesis is to improve and extend Lantmännen’s processes within open innovation. Objectives include studying existing theories and models within open innovation and creating a model that suits Lantmännen. With this model Lantmännen’s existing processes within open innovation will be analyzed and opportunities for improvement identified.
Methodology Substantial literature reviews on existing theories and models within open innovation have been carried out.
