Two main theories about the role of media from a social perspective and civil society are used in order to understand the rise of revolution and what criteria are being met for democratization. The study was conducted using articles, blogs and Facebook updates during 2011. This study shows that social media has provided a sphere for critical political opinions and a freedom of speech that overrode the state repression; However Social media was one of many tools that enhanced the public sphere to make a progress of social mobilization and to some extent, had an impact on the output of 25 January 2011 Egyptian Revolution that led to the ousting of former President Hosni Mubarak. In conclusion, online and offline catalytic tools, strategies, beside political opportunities smoothed the way to social and political mobilization and organization of the ground movement between revolutionaries, which had influence on overall context of the revolution.
I came to the conclusion that social media was used as a tool rather than a cause which erupted into a revolution. (Less)
