- A prosperous garden is closely connected to our natural origin and can offer sound activities for most people. To be outside, in green environments is healty both from a psychological and a physical perspective. Most gardens require continous maintenance which can form an appreciated base for routines. With higher age and changed conditions, keeping the whole garden tidy can become an overwhelming task. At the same time, many people wants to stay in their home, keep appreciated habits and stay independent for as long as possible. In my master thesis I have looked into the possibilities to facilitate activities for seniors (65+) in private gardens.
Working with a user centered process which consists of interviews, observations and design evaluation, I have gained a deeper understandig for what seniors do, think and prefer in relation to the garden. The results have been analyzed and used as a base to develop a product which facilitates garden activities.
Few elders are making large scale rearrangements in their gardens in order to meet their own physical ability. Many of the people I met would rather do smaller, pleasurable changes.
The result of my master thesis is Famn,
a raised garden bed which is easy to assemble and offers an improved working position while cultivating. Famn consists of separate sheets which are easy to assemble into an optional shape. The design is meant to appeal to the user both aesthetically and practically.
The solution can be moved from one season to another and encourages creativity providing a great variety of options in placement and formation.
The benefits of an improved working position can induce the user to go outside and do recreational activities in the garden. To feel the joy of creativity and a reassuring sense of control might give renewed energy to handle everyday challenges. (Less)
