Abstract
This Masters thesis examines the possibilities of using structural masonry in modern building with respect to statical load bearing capacity, building physics, building costs and acoustics. The examination is done by designing three buildings using an existing building as a model. These buildings are then compared to each other and to the existing building with respect to the areas of interest mentioned above. The outer walls in the different building alternatives are constituted of brick canal walls, massive lightweight concrete walls and combination walls of bricks and Leca.

With respect to statical load bearing capacity all of the building alternatives seem to be very suitable, with different possibilities and limitations for constructive design associated with the different alternatives. Also with respect to building physics all of the building alternatives seem very suitable. The estimated building costs of the different building alternatives, the existing building included, differ relatively little from each other.
The influence of load bearing masonry on the architectonic expression is also studied. The different alternatives mean different possibilities for designing the building. Structural masonry in common implies a simplicity in details which contributes to making the mode of operation of the structure easily understandable.
In a summary judgement with respect to the areas of interst mentioned above structural masonry appears to be fully negotiable in modern building, however under the condition that the buildings´ design are made with the structural material in consideration. (Less)
