Abstract (Swedish)
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) was ranked as the sixth leading cause of death in 1990 and is projected to be the fourth leading cause of death worldwide by 2030 due to an increase in smoking rates and demographic changes in many countries (Mathers & Loncar 2006). To diagnose COPD there are several methods which are either imprecise or very expensive. The objective of this master thesis is to investigate if there is a new easy way of measuring the alveolar state in human airways using nanoparticles. In the completed setup a subject inhales a known concentration of aerosol particles of a narrow size range and then holds his/her breath for ten seconds followed by exhalation. The concentration of the exhaled air is measured and a... (More)

The objective of this master thesis is to investigate if there is a new easy way of measuring the alveolar state in human airways using nanoparticles. In the completed setup a subject inhales a known concentration of aerosol particles of a narrow size range and then holds his/her breath for ten seconds followed by exhalation. The concentration of the exhaled air is measured and a ratio between the inhaled and exhaled air is calculated. The setup constructed during this thesis performed deposition measurements on two healthy subjects and the results indicates both sensitivity and precision. Together with previous reports on the subject backing up the theory, the initial measurements of this thesis' created setup seem promising. Further development and statistic analysis will be performed to prove significant differences between healthy subjects and COPD subjects. (Less)
