- Abstract (Swedish)
- Through Bonnie M. Meguid’s theory on Position, Salience and Ownership, I analyse the two Swedish government parties Folkpartiets and Moderaternas strategic approaches towards the populist radical right party Sverigedemokraterna. The period that I analyse is 2006-2012 and the focus is on the parliament level. I use qualitative text analysis as method and concentrate on material like polical programs and debate articles written by parliament members of the parties. The aim is to investigate one of the many explanations on populist radical right parties’ electoral strength successes, namely the strategies of the mainstream parties.

The aim is to investigate one of the many explanations on populist radical right parties’ electoral strength successes, namely the strategies of the mainstream parties.
My main conclusions are that the two mainstream parties (Folkpartiet and Moderaterna) have had different approaches and strategies towards the upcoming niche party Sverigedemokraterna. Folkpartiet debated with Sverigedemokraterna from the beginning and has since both taken distance and got closer to the niche party on different issues. Arguable, Moderaterna has slowly adopted and got closer to the politics of Sverigedemokraterna, after the first period of a dismissive strategy. The outcome of the mainstream parties’ strategies is increased electoral support to the Sverigedemokraterna. Niether one party strategy by itself, nor the combined strategies, have helped in the struggle for electoral support of the established parties. (Less)
