- Abstract
- This study will examine the practices and semiotic structures within the Jewish community in Malmö, linked to the last three years of conflict situations. In the media, Malmö has been described as a problematic city for people with a Jewish heritage, to live in. Swedish, as well as international media caught a big attention to this new conflict. This ethnographic study will present a number of informant perspectives were the conflict, or the “situation Malmö” as it will be called, will be examined. The focus is concentrated on the way the informants experience the conflict, and try to catch the ways in which they perceive, understand and talk about the Malmö context. The ethnographic material will be combined with a cultural analytical framework, where the core concepts are identity building, ethnicity, strategies of smoothing and stereotyping combined with a discourse analysis of both media coverage and individual narratives. The study will also explore an applied agenda. By listening to the narratives of everyday life and conflict, new ideas and strategies can be explored in order to prevent stereotypes and prejudices getting hold in society. (Less)
