- Abstract
- This Master Thesis is about developing a control panel for access control together with Axis Communications AB. The aim with the project was to develop the func- tional aspects of a conceptual aesthetic design. This included protection against the environment, choice of material and technique for wall mounting the panel.
The method used for the project, was a modified version of Ulrich & Eppinger’s book “Product Design and Development”. First, the project started with a pre-study to get familiar with applicable techniques. Second, “Target Specification” was setup and a “Concept Generation” was executed. The method used for the project, was a modified version of Ulrich & Eppinger’s book “Product Design and Development”. First, the project started with a pre-study to get familiar with applicable techniques. Second, “Target Specification” was setup and a “Concept Generation” was executed. The ideas were then screened in the “Concepts Selection”, whereas the best concepts were developed more in detail. The two best design concepts were made into prototypes in “Prototypes, Testing and Refinement”. Finally, the project ended with “Conclusions” and a “Discussion”.
The selection of material was executed before the other sub problems due to the ef- fects on the design process. In the “Concept Selection”, Plastics were chosen because of its low costs and ease to produce. Comparing different Plastics with help from CES EduPack 2010, a software database for materials, the Plastic ASA/PC was considered the most appropriate. As for the wall mount, two different concepts were used, whe- reas one required to be mounted direct on the wall and the other utilizing a fastening plate. In the end, the environmental protection concepts were selected and designed in detail. The final concept was a combination of using protective gaskets for the display and then filling up with epoxy, hence protecting the electric components from vandal- ism and weather. (Less)
