This essay aims at investigating TNCs responsibilities for human rights through their CSR, with a critical theory that questions whether CSR might as well harm the normative and universal stipulation of human rights.
Increasingly, global debate over transnational corporations and responsibility are characterized by political, judicial and moral arguments which imply duties on businesses. This essay finds that TNCs aim of profit maximization often is in conflict with human rights. During era of globalization, addressing responsibilities and obligations through CSR have become necessary to maintain a well-considered brand. But these self-imposed obligations often seem to promise more than they can deliver. A regulative system is often nowhere to be found. Sanctions can neither be made on a moral, political nor judicial level; hence the question of what CSR de facto does for human rights is arising. (Less)
