- Our aim for this essay was to examine, with the method of a discourse analysis, how the best interest of the child is constructed in the political debate on the issue of single women’s right to use artificial insemination. The questions we asked ourselves were: Where do the political parties stand on the issue of single women’s right to use artificial insemination? How is the best interest of the child constructed in the political debate on the issue of single women’s right to use artificial insemination?

Our study has shown that the question on the issue of single women’s right to use artificial insemination is not easy to answer. How the best interest of the child is constructed depends on which perspective you choose to start out from on this issue. Our study also showed that politicians construct the best interest of the child differently. How it is constructed depends on their standpoint on the issue of single women’s right to use artificial insemination. If the politicians do not want the law to be changed so that single women are able to use artificial insemination, they use the child’s best interest in their argumentation in favour of the child. But if the politicians want the law to be changed they use the child’s best interest in their argumentation in favour of the single women. The politicians argue in a way that the concept of the best interest of the child is distinctly. But even if the concept of the best interest for the child is used distinctly in the politicians’ argumentations, we still can see how it is constructed differently depending on the standpoint of the politicians in this issue.
The conclusion we draw is that the best interest of the child is an elusive concept, even in the political debate. The concept is based on the starting point and on the values of the politicians. (Less)
