Abstract
Unsustainable consumption and production patterns is one of the main contributors to environmental degradation and one of the key areas are food consumption together with housing and transport. Because of the retailers strategic position between the consumers and producers they are appointed a key role in the transition to more sustainable consumption. The purpose of this study is to contribute to a better understanding of individual Swedish grocery stores work
with the resale of sustainable products. The focus is on the purchase of sustainable products and how they choose which range of green products that should be in store as well as the challenges and barriers they are facing.

with the resale of sustainable products. The focus is on the purchase of sustainable products and how they choose which range of green products that should be in store as well as the challenges and barriers they are facing.

Research Questions:
- What factors influence the Swedish grocery store owners or managers decisions about selection and purchase of sustainable products?

- What challenges and barriers are facing individual Swedish grocery store owners or managers when they want to increase their supply of sustainable products in their stores?

The study used both a deductive and inductive approach. With the help of a literature review, I build my frame of reference on a number of propositions that form the basis for how the rest of the study is designed. In order to answer the research questions, fifteen grocery stores in Stockholm, Malmö, Hässleholm and Falkenberg are interviewed about their work with green products.

The study supports, at least for the included stores, most of my propositions regarding what affects the stores supply and sale of sustainable products. The factors that influence the stores supply and sales of sustainable products can be seen as a stairway with a series of thresholds they have to reach to get to the next level. The first step and a very important factor for the stores are their customers demand for these products and in general there are a larger range of sustainable products in the stores included from the bigger cities than the smaller cities. The second step is the owner or managers personal interest in sustainable consumption and incentives where some have decided to position themselves with a large supply of these products. The final threshold or challenges for the stores are the shortages off products or local producers that are recurred. This can namely be seen for the three special stores focused on organic and sustainable products and in the shortages off local producers in the Stockholm region. (Less)
