Abstract
During the past four years we have seen a developing economic crisis in Greece. The media have reported cut-backs in the public sector, increased unemployment, upcoming demonstrations and intense political debates regarding emergency loans. The media also portrays how the humanitarian situation in Greece is worse than ever. For example, in fostercare in the country has increased by 150 % in the past six months. The aim of the study is to show how European media report and discuss children in a national crisis and how this regards the UNCRC (Convention on the Rights of the Child), in particular regarding the best interests of the child. Theories that are used include Charles Tilly's reasoning about the media's portrayal of social problems,... (More)
During the past four years we have seen a developing economic crisis in Greece. Theories that are used include Charles Tilly's reasoning about the media's portrayal of social problems, and also include onset based on Meuwisse and Swärd noting the historical dimension of social problems in the media. We have supplemented by using Malcolm Hill’s theory where children, families and government interaction is portrayed. The empirical material consists of 17 parts of news reports from various news agencies in Europe. Based on the study's analysis we have compiled three key results. Media reports on the crisis lack the children's perspective, however the child's perspective is observed by others, such as the parents. Reports on children, instead focus on material needs and the children are used to enhance adults' sufferings. Furthermore, the result of our analysis based on the theories above, show that the UNCRC function can be viewed from two perspectives. The first suggests that media coverage of the situation in Greece reduces UNCRC's purpose when children are not included. The second shows that it stresses the responsibility of the environment to care for the children. (Less)
