The purpose of this study was to examine the Swedish media's construction of football hooliganism as a social problem. Articles concerning the football related death incident of Swedish football hooligan, Tony Deogan in 2002 was chosen to serve as the main focus-point of the gathered material. The event was chosen based on it's qualities as a critical event which generated a large amount of media based material. The study was conducted using a qualitative research method in the form of text-analysis with material gathered from three written source types: an evening newspaper, a morning newspaper and a forum for football hooligan organizations. The purpose of this study was to examine the Swedish media's construction of football hooliganism as a social problem. Articles concerning the football related death incident of Swedish football hooligan, Tony Deogan in 2002 was chosen to serve as the main focus-point of the gathered material. The event was chosen based on it's qualities as a critical event which generated a large amount of media based material. The study was conducted using a qualitative research method in the form of text-analysis with material gathered from three written source types: an evening newspaper, a morning newspaper and a forum for football hooligan organizations. A fourth source of material was a radio documentary that was transcribed by the authors of this study. The gathered material was then processed and coded through the means of an analysis schema based on Meeuwisse & Swärd's definition of the term social problem. The analysis of the processed and coded material was conducted using the theory of social constructionism, primarily as it was formulated by Berger & Luckmann. The results of this study indicated a tendency for media to use a writing approach which reflects upon football hooligans as a deviant social group which needs to be regulated, thus implicitly forming an image of the football hooligan phenomenon as a social problem. The construction of football hooligans as a deviant group in society is further reflected in the material from both the radio documentary and the article concerning the death related incident of 2002 on the football hooligan organizations’ internet forum. Results further indicate a tendency for media to amplify events related to football violence and a general trend for the public to demand restricting action towards football hooliganism, a trend which can also be traced throughout other European nations.
