There seems to be a general belief in the practice of social work that the therapists’ gender is important in the work with clients, something that has also attracted the attention of researchers.
Based on interviews with therapists, this study examines the role that gender was given. The purpose was to also gain a deeper understanding of how the meaning of gender was created and maintained in their work. This is a qualitative focus group study. Two focus groups were a part of this study, on group with five therapists and the other group with four therapists. The aim with the focus groups were that the participants would discuss the matter of the role gender had in their work, based on what they found interesting. The both groups discussed the same themes. Two themes that could be distinguished in the discussion in our focus groups were that they had a tendency to talk about gender in relation to sexuality and/or ethnicity. The gender of the therapist and the client were significant in relations to the clients ethnicity and/or sexuality.
The analysis of the results is based on social constructivism and an intersectional analysis. (Less)
