Abstract
The aim of this study was to find out how girls with anorexia nervosa experienced response from their environment, including health professionals as well as family, friends and the society. Our questions which we based our analysis at were: How do the girls, themselves, describe the response from their environment? And: Which are the common themes in their stories about, how they, experience how they were met by other people? We found several common themes in the autobiographies which we organized into five categories: Violation, Nonchalance, Corroboration and Removing oneself together with Maintenance. In our analysis we have discussed these five categories on the basis of Erving Goffman’s theory about stigma, since we could distinguish that several of the girls in the autobiographies often felt deviant and marked by their environment. As a conclusion we could see that the girls often felt stigmatized by the environment in relation to their illness. This stigma was often hard to get rid of and some of them described that, they felt, they had to try even harder in relation to the environment just to convict other people that they were healthy.
