The purpose of this study was to examine the perceived autonomy and leadership of middle managers in the municipal healthcare sector in Sweden. A qualitative approach was used. Five interviews were conducted to gather the necessary data. The five people that were interviewed were all working as middle managers in the municipal healthcare sector in Helsingborg at the time of the interviews. The respondents were chosen using information available on the city website. An interview manual was created in order to ease the conduction of the interviews
and to ensure that the necessary data was gathered. After collecting the data a classification system was used, a classification system based on the interview manual, in order to systemize the data and to ease its use. Several themes were used to highlight the problems raised in the study; these were questions regarding budget, personnel training and general personnel concerns. Theories used to analyse to the data in order to answer the problems raised were theories regarding leadership and organizations. Conclusions drawn via this method include that the middle managers perceive political intervention into their autonomy as troubling although it is a rare occurrence, that the middle managers in this study perceive themselves to have an important role in the organization and have an ambition to conduct active leadership but that they believe that the nature of their role makes it difficult and that the middle managers frequently are exposed to external pressure that affects their autonomy.
