Abstract (Swedish)
The result of our project is an induction cooktop that utilizes temperature sensors along with an interface that provides new functionality when using different products on the stove. We also designed a kettle, a coffee maker and a waffle iron to visualize the concept.

The motivation for our project came from the fact that many kitchens today are full of electric kitchen appliances, each with its own complexity in heating elements, cables, sensors etc. Not only do these products require a lot of space, but most importantly, they have varying lifespans and are problematic to recycle or repair once broken.

The motivation for our project came from the fact that many kitchens today are full of electric kitchen appliances, each with its own complexity in heating elements, cables, sensors etc. Not only do these products require a lot of space, but most importantly, they have varying lifespans and are problematic to recycle or repair once broken.

The resulting concept is a cooktop made out of concrete with four stainless steel knobs. Concrete is hard and durable, ages gracefully and has more rustic aesthetic qualities than the common glass surface of induction cooktops. The position of the knobs creates a logical mapping to the four corresponding zones. Around the knobs cast in the concrete is a mesh of glass fiber which functions like fiber optics making up the display.

The sensors and the interface are what make this cooktop different from other cookers. It can measure the temperature not only at the base of the cookware but also the temperature of the content. This information enables the possibility to more easily control cookware and increase safety.
At first sight the interface works just like a normal stove with traditional heating levels. When holding down a knob for two seconds, the product menu appears. In this menu, there are symbols that represent different products such as kettle, waffle iron and rice cooker. Using the regular stovetop kettle becomes equally convenient and safe as using an electric kettle.

The user can program the stove to automatically turn off a zone once the set temperature is reached. Similarly, using a cast iron waffle maker will become safer and easier, and the user won’t have to worry about overheating or burning the batter. Any product will work on the stove as long as it is induction proof.

To better illustrate our concept for the kitchen, we made three kitchen products; a kettle, a vacuum coffee maker and a waffle iron. The products are designed to be functional in all stages of use; storing, cooking and cleaning. They are made of stainless steel for easy maintenance and have wooden handles that are safe to touch at all times. The intention is that the products should express simplicity and to be coherent as a product family. (Less)
