Abstract
Below every building there is a different type of foundation work, it can comprise point carried piles or floating piles that pursues down the loads in the ground. A foundation work without piles could also be used, but big subsidence can arise in particular at bigger building constructions, it is however most important that the differentiate subsidence becomes too big. These subsidences can influence the buildings service life time, functionality and aesthetics. In those cases, where big subsidences are not acceptable piles are an excellent way to reduce

These subsidences can influence the buildings service life time, functionality and aesthetics. In those cases, where big subsidences are not acceptable piles are an excellent way to reduce
subsidence.

Another alternative is to use a so called composite pile foundation, in this type of foundation work piles are used in a combination with a base slab, and the ground that the building lies on is used in a bigger degree and the number of piles can be reduced compared to a ground work where only piles are used in order to take up the building's load. In this case, a contact pressure is formed between the base slab and the ground, it leads to an increase of the cost for the base slab since it must be made stronger because more reinforcements and concrete is needed. The reason for using composite pile foundation instead of the other two alternatives where only piles take up the load from the building is that the total number of piles can be reduced which means an economic profitability.

The purpose with this diploma work is to compare two residential building where the foundation work only consists with point carried piles and see if it had been profitable if instead a composite pile foundation where used. The calculation methods have been limited to two computer programs that use the Finite element method and they are called PLAXIS and PLATE. With PLAXIS subsidence, contact pressure, pile force and how many piles that are needed is computed and PLATE is used to calculate the base slab.

The analysis has shown that although piles could be reduced for both the buildings so was it insufficient in order to be profitably with a composite pile foundation. What has effected negatively on a composite pile foundation in these both cases is the big point loads and that the number of piles that is saved isn't enough. Another parameter is that the reinforcement cost became very high with the choice of using a composite pile foundation. (Less)
