This study was conducted with the aim to examine the past and current development and future redevelopment of the Lower Town Site of Fort McMurray, AB, Canada, and to analyze the possible consequences for the current residents. Using the theory of gentrification I studied the situation of the Lower Town Site, comparing it to the gentrification process of Vancouver, BC, Canada. I conducted this study using a triangulation method consisting of document analysis, interviews and statistics. The document analysis consisted mainly of the Lower Town Site Redevelopment Plan and other official documents, where I found a discrepancy between the desired purpose of the impending redevelopment and the actual Lower Town Site situation. Using focus interviews I spoke to two politicians, two real estate agents and two city laborers. During these interviews I also found a discrepancy between policies and the actual situation of the Lower Town Site. My statistical analysis was mainly used as a secondary source to verify my interviews and document analysis. I found that even though the impending redevelopment of the Lower Town Site implies an inclusion of a diverse population, residents of lower income and the homeless might be subjected to an enforced displacement.
