The focus of this study was to research the diffe-rent kinds of control that are used within these drug rehabilitation programs and to establish if there were variations or similarities between the two programs regarding how control is perceived and exercised by the therapists. We have carried out six semi-structured interviews with therapists, representing both the Milieu therapy and the Twelve step program, on the subject of control and voluntariness within their respective programs. In the analysis we chose to look at the therapists’ role from an organizational perspective. The results showed that the therapists control over the clients within both these programs is far reaching, even though the two programs have quite different ideological views on the questions regarding the correct role of control and voluntariness within drug rehabilitation.
