Abstract
The aim of this study was to see how a group home for mentally ill people was portrayed in a local newspaper debate about building a new home for mentally ill people in residential area. The research material found in the daily newspaper Helsingborgs Dagblad was both articles and debates. We selected the articles and debates (posts) that could answer our questions. We used text analysis and were inspired by discourse analysis methodology and a social constructionist perspective as theory. In the material we found that there were two different ways of debating and talking (discourses) about the group home, and also how the people with mental illness was portrayed. We did therefore divide the material in two discourses; one proponents... (More)

We did therefore divide the material in two discourses; one proponents discourse and one opponents discourse. The key finding in the opponents discourse (mainly families) was that they were afraid something would happen to their children if they placed the group home for mentally ill persons in their area. They where not against the group home itself but the placement of it in their neighbourhood. In the proponents discourse (mainly officials and politicians from social services/social welfare board) they argued that the resistance was due to lack of knowledge and myths about people with mental illness since they meant that the people that would live there are not dangerous.
