- Abstract
- This report is a master thesis at Lund University. The aim of the study was to investigate how the formation of a pre-recorded fire evacuation message impacts on the initial evacuation process. Four different messages were tested in 15 unannounced evacuation experiments in cinemas and lecture halls. The occupants in the evacuation experiments filled out a questionnaire about the evacuation and the messages. Based on the study it is recommended that a pre-recorded fire evacuation message is performed by a determined voice. It must be formulated so that the occupants in a distinct way are given enough information to make a fast decision to evacuate. It was also found that there were no big differences in interpretation of the messages... (More)

Based on the study it is recommended that a pre-recorded fire evacuation message is performed by a determined voice. It must be formulated so that the occupants in a distinct way are given enough information to make a fast decision to evacuate. It was also found that there were no big differences in interpretation of the messages between different age groups or gender. Women do though generally show a somewhat higher degree of negative feelings, for example stress, in connection with the evacuation. It could also be seen that the evacuation continued even though the alarm stopped sounding during the evacuation process. This result is though only valid during the conditions that the occupants have begun the movement towards the exits. (Less)
