- ABSTRACT
The aim of this study was to examine autumnal stopover strategies of migratory passerines, with the main focus on stopover duration, departure time and departure direction in relation to biometrics (age, sex and fat reserves), different migratory strategies (long, short-to-medium and partial migration) and weather conditions. During the autumn migration season of 2010, in conjunction with the regular ringing scheme at Falsterbo Bird Station, individual passerines of five target species (willow warbler, garden warbler, song thrush, European robin and blue tit) were captured, measured and released with radio transmitters, and their subsequent movements and departure events were registered by an automated radio tracking system.... It proved an effective means of obtaining robust estimates of passerine stopover duration and departure times. I found that stopover duration was species-specific, with blue tits, the partial migrants, stopping over for longer periods than both short- and medium and long-distance migrants. Thus, my results indicate that migratory strategies can be linked to the stopover duration of passerine migrants. In contrast, fat reserves at arrival, age or sex did not seem to be involved in determining the duration of stopover. Departure times also differed between species. The nocturnal migrants, which include European robins, willow and garden warblers, departed after sunset, whereas blue tits departed in the early morning. Song thrushes did not seem to have any preferred departure time. Unfortunately, the departure direction of the tagged individuals could not be reliably determined and neither could the influence of meteorological conditions on stopover duration and departure decision be ascertained, due to difficulties when trying to synchronize weather data with departures. Nevertheless, the study revealed unprecedented insight into the stopover duration and departure time of migratory passerines at Falsterbo. (Less) - Abstract (Swedish)
