- Abstract
- Obesity is an increasing problem that brings suffering to the individual and complicates life not only daytime, but also during the night. There is a correlation between being overweight and sleep apnea. This paper aims toward creating models using risk factors, to help the evaluating physician determine whether or not the patient has an increased risk for obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). One model is based on what the physician can measure hands on and acquire from the medical history, and the other is based on a questionnaire for the patient to fill in. The patients in this study have already been, or will be subject to weight control surgery (Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass).
With the statistical method of multiple logistic... (More) - Obesity is an increasing problem that brings suffering to the individual and complicates life not only daytime, but also during the night. The patients in this study have already been, or will be subject to weight control surgery (Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass).
With the statistical method of multiple logistic regression the examined variables are modeled in order to investigate the relationship between sleep apnea and the risk factors.
The material for this study has been made available by the Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic at Kalmar County Hospital, Sweden.
Due to the fact that the patients in the study share many of the same characteristics that come with obesity, there is little variation in the sample. Some factors that have turned out to be significant for OSAS in other studies do not show significance in this study. (Less)
