Asbestkontamination av dricksvatten och associerade risker

Asbest är ett samlingsnamn för mineralen krysotil, aktinolit, antofyllit, amosit, tremolit och krokiodolit. Alla är de värmetåliga och stresståliga vilket har gjort dem användbara inom industrin. Dock har det bevisats att de vid inandning ger upphov till svåra lungåkommor. Under 70- och 80-talet oroade sig forskare även över huruvida det fanns ett samband mellan mag- och tarmcancer och asbestkontaminerat dricksvatten. Undersökningar visade att kontamination huvudsakligen sker genom erosion av exponerad asbestrik berggrund samt korrosion av asbestcementrör (AC-rör). Under 70- och 80-talet oroade sig forskare även över huruvida det fanns ett samband mellan mag- och tarmcancer och asbestkontaminerat dricksvatten. Undersökningar visade att kontamination huvudsakligen sker genom erosion av exponerad asbestrik berggrund samt korrosion av asbestcementrör (AC-rör). Potentiella samband mellan cancer och asbest i drickvatten analyserades men resultaten var tvetydiga. Bristen på vetenskapligt utförande och enhetliga metoder resulterade i att merparten studier klassificerades som opålitliga. I dagsläget anser Världshälsoorganisationen att oralt intagen asbest ej utgör någon hälsofara. Dock bör spridning till dricksvatten ändå förhindras då vattenburen asbest vid indunstning kan bli luftburen samt då krysotil innehåller höga mängder tungmetaller som genom kemiska reaktioner frisätts. During the 70’s and 80’s scientists also worried about whether there was a relationship between intestine-cancer and asbestos-contaminated drinking-water. Surveys showed that water is contaminated by erosion of exposed bedrock rich in asbestos and corrosion of asbestos-cement pipes (AC-pipes). The AC-pipes have been the main cause of worries since they were used for transportation of drinking-water. Further surveys have shown that erosion and corrosion are dependent upon weather and local water aggressiveness amongst other things. Numerous investigations regarding cancer and orally ingested asbestos were carried out but none showed any reliable results. The lack of scientific methodology resulted in that the majority of the studies were classified as non-reliable. Today the World Health Organization regard orally ingested asbestos as non-threatening to human health. Nonetheless distribution of asbestos should be inhibited since chrysotile contains high amounts of heavy metals that are being chemically released.
