Several plausible factors, determining food security in investor countries, geographical preconditions for farming and the target country institutions are analyzed, both theoretically and statistically. The analysis derives from theories in recent literature regarding large-scale land acquisitions. Using relevant macro variables, statistical analyses shows how investor country food imports and low current farming yields might be important factors determining the demand for land. The target country’s institutions, especially the rate of compensation to previous land users,... (More)

Using relevant macro variables, statistical analyses shows how investor country food imports and low current farming yields might be important factors determining the demand for land. The target country’s institutions, especially the rate of compensation to previous land users, seem to be an important pull factor. When these results are confirmed, the paper discusses the possibility of sustainable and just land acquisitions, in accordance with the recommendations of the World Bank and the UN. (Less)
